What is Mil Thickness?
Gauge, as it relates to packaging, is one-hundred-thousandths of an inch. For reference, human hair comes in at around 400 gauge, or 0.4% of an inch. Gauge is a popular unit of measurement for the thickness of stretch film; the higher the gauge, the thicker the film. Thicker film is stronger than thinner film, but can be more costly.
Heavy Duty – We define heavy duty stretch film as anything over 100 gauge. Due to the thickness of the film, these products tend to have less length per roll but are the strongest available in our catalog. These are commonly recommended for wrapping heavy industrial products.
Regular – Any films that are 80-99 gauge are classified as regular. The 80 gauge films are the bestselling and most common products. This thickness offers the best strength for most applications without the added costs of thicker heavy-duty films. If you are unsure of which film to use, we recommend starting with an 80 gauge film in most cases.
Medium – Our medium gauges range from 60-79 gauge. These films are recommended for smaller loads or where lightweight items are being bundled.
Economy – We classify any film under 60 gauge as economy in our catalog. These films are only recommended for the lightest product bundling and wrapping applications. These films offer better pricing than heavier gauge films, but at the expense of strength.

Heat sealers are machines that are used for mending both the sides of packaging film together so that it forms an air tight seal. The heat sealers use heat to melt and mend materials together to form a seal. However, it is necessary to understand what materials can be used with the heat sealers. Also, you need to determine the thickness of the packaging film to be used with specific type of sealers.
Common Materials
Many products are sealed using a heat sealer. Most of the flexible materials are measured in mils. Materials that are 1-3 mils thick are considered standard. Materials ranging from 4-8 mils of thickness are medium to heavy. The thicker materials need more heat and thicker seals to mend the material together properly.
Types of Heat Sealers
There are two varieties of heat sealers available on the market - flat wire and round wire. The former is designed for thicker films that are up to 8 mils thick while the latter have thinner seal seams and are generally used for thinner materials.
Round wire sealers - These offer certain benefits over the flat wire sealers. The round wire sealers cut excess film once the seal is done and they also have thinner seal seams that look better. These sealers are often used with Shrink Wrapping. A drawback to the round wire sealers is that they form a thin seal that limits the strength of the seal. They cannot make proper, reliable seals with films thicker than 4 mils.
Flat wire sealers - The flat wire sealers are available in a variety of widths and can be conveniently used with thicker films carrying heavier products. These make a strong, full seal and leave the excess film on the bag itself which can either be used for hanger holes or custom printed headers. They can also be embossed for an added strength to the seal. The only disadvantage with the flat wire sealers is that it doesn't cut down the excess film from the package. In case the film needs to be cut, you would require a separate cutter to do the job.
Depending on the products you must pack, you can now determine which heat sealer would work best for you to refrain from packaging disasters and a bad customer experience.

Stretch wrap machines are one such investment that is usually overlooked as wrapping pallets by hand seems easy and cost-effective alternative. There is no right time than now to consider purchasing a stretch wrap machine. Below are certain signs which if you notice at your warehouses, there is no better option than buying a stretch wrap machine.
#1 Greater than 2 loads damaged due to toppling
Product damage during transit is an obvious risk. Toppling or collapsing of loads can happen due to multiple reasons such as mishandling, improper wrapping/stacking of pallets, selecting the wrong film, etc. However, in majority of the cases when pallets are hand-wrapped, the reason is improper wrapping.
Stretch films should be stretched to their maximum capacity i.e. 85%-90% to hold loads in place. With hand wrapping, this definitely cannot be achieved.
Sometimes, the damage caused due to toppling of loads can be higher than the cost of a stretch wrap machine.
#2 Frequent employee complaints and injuries
Wrapping several pallets by hand every day causes dizziness and back aches. Employees can become fatigued, frustrated and this can negatively impact their efficiency at work. Moreover, workplace injuries can be costly that can even exceed the cost of a new stretch wrap machine.
If you have received several complaints about health issues and time spent in wrapping loads, it is time for the capital expenditure.
#3 High expenditure on stretch films
When hand wrapping, employees hardly obtain the maximum stretchability of the Stretch Wrap and this accounts for more film usage which can easily be reduced to half if stretched to its capacity.
#4 Taller pallet loads
Wrapping tall pallets is really difficult and so is the ability to roll the wrap high and obtain the required stretch rate. A stretch wrap machine is the best solution for wrapping tall shipments that also ensure worker safety and saves time.
If you have noticed any of the above signs, then it is the right time to change your traditional means and buy a new stretch wrapping machine. Having automated the stretch wrapping tasks, you will witness increased efficiency, reduced product loss/damage, lower employment costs and increased employee satisfaction.

'Packaging' - There is so much buzz around the word itself and there are various dimensions related to it that play an important role in the decision making of buyers. Supermarket shopping has brought convenience to the buyers and competition to the sellers. It is a challenging task to end up in a shopping cart at the supermarket, and the journey is not easy. However, the slightest slip up can cost you money and bring down the sales numbers.
Avoid these mistakes to increase the selling probability of your products:
- Lack of Package Testing
It is very disappointing to find a product damaged inside the packaging due to production error or simply by the environment the package is subjected to. Customers straight away decline purchasing anything from your brand if they come across a poor packaging or witness a damaged product within.
It is extremely important to test your product packaging after design and production for shipping durability, rough handling and tamper resistance.
- Outdated packaging
Never stay slow in the race. Keep an eye on your targeted customers' buying habits and also on what other competitors are doing to attract your loyal buyers. You may need to upgrade your packaging design and strategy frequently to keep users engaged with your brand. You must make sure to provide just what customers are looking for in your packaging - informed label, style, simplicity, usability and recyclability.
- Use of Manual Labor
Manual labor costs money. Automation can help you save enough time and money. Automating the product packaging can seem costly; however, it pays in the long run as you do not have to wait for hours to dispatch a lot of your product into packaging.
- Using the Wrong Shrink Film Specifications
The size and specifications of the Stretch Film you are using to wrap and hold items together also matters. Shrink film is by measured by gauge and width which means heavier and thicker films will cost more than the lighter ones. Lower film gauge can be used to provide the necessary protection by weighing less and reducing the production costs. In this case, you must ensure a perfect stretch wrap for binding your products together to avoid any damage or loss during transit.
- Skipping Preventive Maintenance
When business works well, it is easy to skip a proper maintenance plan. This ignorance can cost you money. A regular routine of preventive maintenance for your packaging machinery is a must. An overlooked minor issue can build up to be a major concern in the long run and then it may be too late. Your machine may break down any time and if you have a major consignment on target, it would be a costly affair.
- Choosing Wrong Packaging Materials
Select Packaging Materials that are in line for your product lines, as otherwise, you will simply lose your customer base. When talking about product packaging, there can be various pointers you may have to consider. Our aim is to help companies avoid packaging mishaps and boost sales!

So, the auction is over and you're all set to ship your items. But do you know that a more important thing comes now? Packing and shipping your goods appropriately, in their original condition, is an important task as no one likes to get a damaged parcel. You see a huge assortment of items that are differently sized and shaped. To save you from packaging mishaps, here are a few take-aways for optimum packaging of auctioned goods.
Order Standard Size Boxes
Don't stack packing boxes in hundreds of numbers as you might end up wasting extra space while packing smaller items like watches and medals. Instead, order packs of 10 or 25 in different sizes so that you have the right size for right item.
Ensure Proper Protection
Bubbles, loose fill chips, tissue papers and what not... You must ensure to fill in so much material to protect your packaged item from shocks during transit. Bubble Wraps are a popular and cost-effective source for packaging delicate or fragile items.
Palletize Securely
Stretch Wraps are the ultimate solution to hold huge loads together while transporting in bundles. Whether it is furniture or any industrial item, stretch wrapping ensures no dust build-up and safe transportation with no tampering.
Label Accurately
Sophisticated labeling adds the required final touch to your products. Shipping Labels contain information that is necessary to intimate the users about the packed goods such as expiry dates, contents packed, price, etc.
With the above packaging materials, you will be readily equipped with what is required to ship the auctioned goods, but some awkward flats, talls and longs you may require special packaging boxes and shipping arrangements. It is not about selling your goods but more about how you interact with the receiver at every step of the selling process, including the packaging and shipping.
As many incidences speak of items mishandled during transit causing loss to both the parties, it is important to follow a proper packaging and shipping process.
